Wisconsin introduced a Statewide Operator’s Permit, effective January 1, 2025, giving people who serve alcohol a single permit that is valid at licensed or permitted premises anywhere in the state. Traditional municipal operator’s (bartender) licenses remain valid only within the issuing municipality.
What this means for Wisconsin servers
If you serve alcohol in more than one city, or expect to move between employers in different municipalities, the statewide permit is a streamlined alternative to holding multiple local licenses. Wisconsin’s Responsible Beverage Server Training, overseen by the Department of Revenue, remains the state’s official seller-server education program, and cities including Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay increasingly require this training as a condition of employment. Many employers statewide now build certification into onboarding as standard.
If you need your responsible server training, you can complete it through our Wisconsin bartending license course.
