Do you need a license to bartend in Indiana?
Indiana state law requires the completion of a certified server training program for persons holding an Employee Permit to dispense alcoholic beverages. The certification must be obtained no later than 120 days from the hire date at an alcohol establishment.
Certification is valid for two years for individuals 19-20 years old. You must also complete training and submit your Certificate of Completion along with the Restricted Permit Application, available on the ATC Online Services website, prior to serving or selling alcoholic beverages.
How long does it take to train a server?

Is Serving Alcohol the same as ServSafe or Tips certification?
We receive several inquiries about the difference between TIPS® certification, ServSafe, and Serving Alcohol Inc. All three are nationally recognized brands as state-accredited alcohol seller-server training and advanced training for managers and their staff.
TIPS® Training is a large conglomerate funded by investment bankers. ServSafe is administered and owned by the National Restaurant Association.
Serving Alcohol, on the other hand, is employee-owned and operated. We focus solely on state-approved alcohol training and food handler courses.

How old do you have to be to serve alcohol in Indiana?
In Indiana, you can serve alcohol (not pour or mix drinks) at the age of 18 with a Restricted Employee Permit and completing our Indiana-certified server training. You must also be supervised by a certified server over 21 years of age. You can sell alcohol at 18 in grocery stores or convenience stores. To pour alcohol as a bartender your must be 21 years old.

what is an Indiana employee permit?
An Indiana alcohol employee permit verifies that you’re certified to serve alcohol by the state of Indiana.
First, you need to complete a certified alcohol server training program, as discussed above.
Then, you will either apply for a Restricted Employee Permit (if you are 19 or 20 years old) or an Unrestricted Employee Permit (if you are 21 or older). You can submit a paper application or use Indiana’s online application portal.
Once your permit is issued, you can print a copy of your permit from the licensing portal at any time.
