CA RBS Training Online: What It Is, Who Needs It, and How to Get Certified

If you serve alcohol at a California bar, restaurant, or any on-premises licensed venue, completing CA RBS training online is now a legal requirement — not a suggestion. Since September 2022, California’s Responsible Beverage Service law mandates that every alcohol server complete an ABC-approved training course and pass a state certification exam. Here is everything you need to know before you start.
What is CA RBS training online?
CA RBS training online is the digital version of California’s mandatory Responsible Beverage Service education program, regulated by the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) department. It teaches alcohol servers how to check IDs correctly, recognize signs of intoxication, refuse service safely, and understand their personal liability under California liquor law — all from any device, at any time.
Only training from a California ABC-approved online provider counts toward your legal requirement. Completing an unapproved course — no matter how similar — will not allow you to sit the state exam.
Who is required to complete it?
The mandate applies to all employees at on-premises ABC-licensed establishments who serve, sell, or supervise the service of alcohol. This includes bartenders, cocktail servers, floor servers, and managers. New hires have 60 days from their start date to complete training and pass the certification exam. Off-premises retailers like grocery or liquor stores are not covered by this specific requirement.
How the online process works
1 Create a free ABC account. Go to abc.ca.gov/rbs and register. This gives you a personal RBS Server ID required before you can enroll in any training course.
2 Complete an approved online course. Enroll with a California ABC-approved provider. The self-paced course typically takes 2 to 4 hours and is available in both English and Spanish. Your provider submits your completion directly to the ABC.
3 Pass the California ABC exam. Within 30 days of finishing your course, log back into the ABC portal and take the state exam. The fee is $3, paid to the state. Passing this exam gives you your official RBS certification number — this is what makes you legally compliant.

Frequently asked questions
Can I complete the entire RBS process online?
Yes. Both the training course and the ABC exam are completed fully online. No in-person visit is required at any stage.
Does completing the course mean I am certified?
No. You must also pass the separate California ABC exam through the state portal. A course completion certificate alone does not satisfy the legal requirement.
How do I renew my CA RBS certification online?
Your certification is valid for 3 years. To renew, simply repeat the same two-step process — complete an approved online course and pass the ABC exam again.
