Recent data suggests that teenage girls are drinking more than boys, and for more serious reasons. The results came from the Partnership Attitude Tracking Study which surveys teen attitudes and behaviors. The number of girls who are drinking rose from 53 percent to 59 percent whereas boys stayed around 52 percent. The rise in teenage girls drinking may be affected by the rise in alco-pops that are available. Girls also admitted to drinking as a way to handle their problems whereas boys drink for more social reasons. This may be because teenage girls are more attuned to their feelings, or are just more willing to admit their emotions than boys.

A group of retailers in Indiana are campaigning to change alcohol laws. The Alliance of Responsible Alcohol Retailers want the state to allow retailers to sell cold beer and sell alcohol on Sunday. Currently, cold beer is only available at liquor stores. The group claims that the changes would benefit consumers. They also say that the current laws are costing the state in millions of dollars in revenue. Opponents of the change say that the changes would harm liquor stores. They also say it could lead increases in underage drinking as large retailers are more invested in generating revenue rather than the safety of the community. Last year a similar bill was struck down.

Results of a survey found that 39 percent of parents plan to provide their teenagers with alcohol for summer break if asked. The survey of 1,000 was done by the charity Drinkware. In the survey parents had said that they prefer their children get alcohol from them rather than somewhere else. There are concerns that the parents behavior has contributed to a rise in teenage drinking.

An end of the year party led to many citations as police cracked down on underage drinking. The party was held by University of Wisconsin- Green Bay students to celebrate the end of the school year but was ended when police obtained a search warrant and entered the party. The police ended the party and gave 59 citations, the majority being for underage drinking. Police had said that this was an unusually high number of students to be found drinking underage at a party. Different municipalities may have different legal consequences for under age drinkers.
