Raleigh Amphitheater Remains Unnamed

The new outdoor amphitheater in Raleigh will not be named the Bud Light Amphitheater. Public venues cannot be named after alcoholic beverages and brands and North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission rejected the requested exemption. Had the exemption been allowed the city would have earned $1.5 million over five years in exchange for naming rights and would have helped to offset the cost of running the $2.5 million venue.
The commission considered comments submitted through its website and provided by public officials when making its decision. Students from local high schools stated that the proposed name could have a negative affect on children their age. The Coalition for Alcohol and Drug Free Teenagers of Chapel Hill stated that the decision would, “abandon once and for all this sound and responsible public policy in favor of the alcohol industry”.
The city is revisiting corporate sponsors that had previously expressed interest. Without a sponsor there is little chance of the amphitheater running.
