Indiana retailers campaign to change alcohol laws

A group of retailers in Indiana are campaigning to change alcohol laws. The Alliance of Responsible Alcohol Retailers want the state to allow retailers to sell cold beer and sell alcohol on Sunday. Currently, cold beer is only available at liquor stores. The group claims that the changes would benefit consumers. They also say that the current laws are costing the state in millions of dollars in revenue. Opponents of the change say that the changes would harm liquor stores. They also say it could lead increases in underage drinking as large retailers are more invested in generating revenue rather than the safety of the community. Last year a similar bill was struck down.

Community leaders hope to end Ironman

Hermosa Beach City Council members are working to end the Ironman drinking event. They met recently to discuss ideas on how to end the 32-year-old tradition. The event, which included around 500 competitors last year, has the participants run a mile on the beach, paddle on their surfboards for another mile then finish by chugging a sixer on the shoreline. Whomever finishes first without vomiting is declared the winner. City officials say that the excessive drinking and rowdy behavior scares families away.

New Mexico allows firearms into restaurants

New Mexico is the newest state to allow firearms into its restaurants that serve alcohol. 40 other states allow those who bear firearms to legally bring their weapons into establishments that serve alcohol. Establishment owners who disagree with the new law are able to place a sign in their window that prohibits gun carriers to bring their firearm inside. Though it is legal to bring a firearm into an establishment that serves wine and beer, it is still illegal to bring  a concealed weapon into an establishment with a full liquor license.

Parental support partying, promote underage drinking

Results of a survey found that 39 percent of parents plan to provide their teenagers with alcohol for summer break if asked. The survey of 1,000 was done by the charity Drinkware. In the survey parents had said that they prefer their children get alcohol from them rather than somewhere else. There are concerns that the parents behavior has contributed to a rise in teenage drinking.
